I woke up on this Easter morning to the twin thoughts of “where did Dan put the gift cards for the Easter baskets?” and “Whoa, has the Easter story ever been this relevant?”
Stay with me. You don’t have to be a Christian or a believer of any kind to understand the story of Jesus — a human being who was trying to spread a message of love and kindness and personal responsibility and empathy and peace and understanding and care of others — who was betrayed and denied by the people who promised to follow and protect him. It isn’t a huge leap to say that Jesus could stand in for the Constitution and the current administration are the disciples.
This betrayal and denial is celebrated and encouraged by the chief priests and elders, because his death would clear the way for them to continue to influence the people however they wanted, becoming richer and more powerful in the process. Is it just me, or does that sound like Musk and Bezos and all the other billionaires who are benefiting from the destruction of our democracy?
In my not-so-humble opinion, the true villain in the entire saga is Pilate. Pontius Pilate knew that Jesus hadn’t done a damn thing wrong. He offered to pardon Jesus, but when the priests/billionaires got their followers (MAGA) to demand crucifixion, Pilate shrugged and agreed.
So who stands in for Pilate in my clumsy, ham-handed little allegory?
We do.
Happy Easter, folks. Happy Passover. Happy Spring. Sending love and strength and hope for the future.
Thanks for reading.
Love, Susie
Hope you found the gift cards!!!
